All of us here at Kaimar Consulting are very supportive of animal welfare groups and organisations here in Cyprus. We all have a multitude of furry friends most of whom have been rescued from the streets or, in some cases, dumped in our gardens.
The directors of the company were fined last year for walking their dogs on the beach. After this, someone suggested another beach which was suitable for walking dogs as it was very ‘out of the way’ and not frequented by the normal tourists or local sun worshipers. After over a year of walking the dogs on this secluded beach, they were unfortunately fined again and informed that “It is illegal to walk any dog, on any beach, on the whole of Cyprus” (for more details, please click here)
The following article is courtesy of the Cyprus Mail newspaper:
LOCAL municipalities are to be given new incentives to allow plans to create designated beaches for dogs as early as next month.
The news is expected to be welcomed by dog owners, who have repeatedly criticised the Central Foreshore Committee (CFC) for failing to implement a four-year-old law that obliges it to allocate geographical locations for dog beaches.
The proposal, which will include the construction of shower, toilet and kiosk facilities at at least one beach per coastal district, should be ready to go before local authorities by September.
The CFC’s Cyprus Tourism Organisation representative, Glafkos Kariolou, explained that the four-year-delay had been caused by a hiccup in the law. Although the Committee was obliged to allocate geographical locations for the beaches, it did not have the authority to materialise the plan, he said.
That was entirely up to each municipality and they had so far refused to act.
Additionally, the law did not specify who was going to put in the toilets, who was going to create an access road to the beach, who was going to ensure there was parking, or who was going to be responsible for the collection of garbage and animal waste, Kariolou said.
“The law just says the committee must locate positions,” he said.
For example, last year the CFC pinpointed a derelict pebble beach in Larnaca near the former refinery. It had access, room for parking and was on the rubbish collectors’ route, but the municipality rejected the plan.
“You have a legal gap between pinpointing and the actual operation of the beach. One body allocates and another implements the decision… This is a weakness in the law because the CFC does not necessarily agree with the local authority,” he said.
For the plan to work, allocations would have to be done with the local authorities’ co-operation, Kariolou added.
“What is now happening is that the CFC has prepared structural plans for these geographical locations. These are very small buildings that will include showers, toilets a small kiosk or restaurant,” he said.
The idea was to encourage local authorities to pick out a location acceptable to them in their district to create a dog beach.
“We hope that the government will subsidise these buildings because we have pointed out that we are having a problem in getting the local authorities to accept this,” he added.
“The incentives are a readymade plan and there is a substantial amount of money to assist them [municipalities] in building this facility,” he said.
An additional bonus would be the ability to ensure all dogs going to the beach are registered.
“Does it have all injections? Has it been checked by a veterinarian and is okay to swim? This means local authorities will have the power to check that all dogs in their region are registered.”
Kariolou also pointed out that dog owners would be willing to pay a logical amount to go to a designated beach with good quality facilities.
“We are trying to explain to local authorities that this won’t be a burden but an enhancement and will offer them money,” he said.
The CFC is now waiting to hear back from the costing office regarding the cost of the whole project and from the government on the extent to which it would financially support municipalities. It should have answers by next month.
The plan will then be to create dog beaches in the districts of Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta.
He said: “Unfortunately if have no response we are not going to wait but shall apply the law, meaning we will come out with an announcement stating where we, as the CFC, believe are the right places to be called dog beaches. In some cases this might mean a discrepancy between us and the local authority.”
This would then cause problems as a number of dog owners would then roll up at the beach with their animals and create a mess without the necessary logistics and infrastructure in place.
The hotline for any complaints regarding the beach and the sea is 22-691212. Complaints can be made Monday-Friday from 7.30am to 2.30pm. Outside office hours, callers can leave an anonymous or named message which is recorded and dealt with the following day.

On 2nd August filming began at the Kaimar Consulting office for a German National TV programme showcasing Cyprus called Mein Neur Job.

Three potential new Sales personnel were brought over from Germany for interviewing and to perform various tasks to assess their suitability for the post within the Kaimar Office culminating in one lucky contestant being offered the job.
It was a rollercoaster week with the crew and our people dashing around Cyprus and there were a couple of heart stopping moments but everyone returned unscathed.

This is Jens, the cameraman, who decided at one point to hang out of the window of the moving car with his €50,000 camera. The main concern with this was not that the highly experienced Jens didn’t know what he was doing, more that the excellent driving standards here in Cyprus would cause problems!!
Despite the driving, Jens tells us that he is so impressed with Cyprus that he is contemplating buying a house in Limassol! He does a lot of work in the Arabian states and Cyprus is obviously closer than and of course Cyrus is a much nicer place than Germany.
Two of the villages visited were Kalo Chorio and Arakapas.
With their property for sale in Kalo Chorio, Keith and Ilse Barr proved to be the perfect hosts to the contestants and the crew and provided invaluable information about the village and a wonderful spread of German foods for anyone who was feeling a little homesick! A massive thank you goes out to Keith & Ilse from Kai, Marcus and the film crew for their hospitality.
The second property was a challenge for the three contestants. After fortifying themselves with bacon butties from Caz & Daves (widely thought to be the best bacon butties in Limassol!!) at Fassouri Market, the contestants had set off individually to find a specific property chosen by Kai. The property for sale was in the beautiful and picturesque village of Arakapas. After a very long day for the contestants and crew, the property was found by all.
Our TV celebrities also took a trip to Kourion.

There were plenty of witty remarks about how best to renovate and restore the site as all of us are involved in some way, shape or form with the Estate Agency business. Stefan is heavily involved in Eco Housing back in Germany and Alex and Detlef are both Estate Agents. We had no problems gaining permission to film as we were told it was ok as we were not Cypriot!
The contestants were also given the task over the week to design an advert to go into a local newspaper to advertise the property for sale in Cyprus. Everyone did well but of course there could only be one winner!! This was the final task of the week and was the culminating factor for choosing the winner.
And that winner was….. Well, you’ll have to wait to see the finished product to find that out I’m afraid!
It was a great week of hard work and fun and we here at Kaimar Consulting can’t wait to see the finished product!
